Voigtländer Brings Nokton 35mm F/1.4 Classic Lens to Canon RF and Nikon Z
Table of Contents
Voigtländer made a strong showing at CP+ 2026, announcing several new lenses — including the Nokton Classic 35mm F/1.4 for Canon RF and Nikon Z mounts. The fast manual-focus prime was previously available for Sony E mount and is now expanding to additional mirrorless systems.
The new RF and Z mount versions bring the distinctive rendering of the Nokton Classic series to a wider audience. Unlike many modern lenses that prioritize technical perfection, the Nokton 35mm F/1.4 Classic embraces a more character-driven look by intentionally preserving certain optical aberrations to produce a softer, more classic aesthetic.
Character-Focused Optical Design
The lens uses an optical design with eight elements in six groups and a 10-bladed aperture diaphragm. High-refractive-index glass helps suppress spherical aberrations to maintain good sharpness, but the design deliberately avoids fully correcting all aberrations in order to preserve the lens’s signature rendering style.
The 35mm focal length remains a versatile choice for full-frame photography, offering a slightly wider field of view than a standard lens. It is well suited for street photography, travel, documentary work, and environmental portraits. The bright F/1.4 aperture also allows for shooting in low-light conditions while providing shallow depth of field.
Like most Voigtländer lenses, the Nokton Classic 35mm F/1.4 is manual focus only. However, the lens includes electronic contacts that allow communication with compatible camera bodies.
This enables recording of lens data in EXIF metadata and supports features such as focus magnification, in-body image stabilization, and lens correction profiles.
The lens can focus as close as 0.27 meters, providing a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.47 — slightly closer than the Sony E mount version, which focuses down to 0.3 meters.
Mount-Specific Designs
The Canon RF and Nikon Z versions feature slightly different exterior designs.
The Nikon Z version uses a scalloped focus ring similar to the Sony E mount model, while the Canon RF version features a diamond-knurled focus ring. The RF mount lens measures 37.6mm long and weighs 260 grams, while the Z mount version is slightly longer at 41.6mm and weighs 250 grams.
Voigtländer’s reputation for precise mechanical construction and tactile manual focus control remains a key appeal of the Nokton series, along with its distinctive optical rendering.
Pricing and Availability
Pricing for the Canon RF and Nikon Z versions of the Nokton Classic 35mm F/1.4 has not yet been announced.
The Sony E mount version currently sells for around $799, but is currently on sale at B&H Photo for $599. Availability for the new mounts is expected to be announced at a later date.
