Insta360 Finally Launches the Luna Ultra Gimbal Camera

A New Entry Into the Gimbal Camera MarketAfter months of teasers, leaks, and speculation, Insta360 has officially unveiled the Luna Ultra. The new pocket-sized gimbal camera arrives as a direct competitor to the DJI Osmo Pocket 4P and introduces several unique features, including a detachable touchscreen remote, dual cameras, and Leica-engineered optics.
The announcement comes just a day after the Luna Ultra quietly appeared for pre-order at B&H Photo. According to PetaPixel, the camera was originally expected to launch next week, making today’s announcement an unexpected surprise.

The Luna Ultra enters a growing category of compact creator-focused cameras but distinguishes itself with a number of features that have not previously appeared in a pocket gimbal camera.
Dual Cameras and Leica-Engineered Optics
At the heart of the Luna Ultra is a dual-camera system consisting of a 1-inch sensor paired with a Leica Summicron lens and a secondary telephoto camera built around a 1/1.3-inch sensor and an F/2.9 lens.
The telephoto camera offers up to 6x lossless zoom and 12x digital zoom, giving creators greater flexibility when framing portraits, interviews, and distant subjects.
The camera can capture 37-megapixel UltraPhotos and create 200-megapixel Scenic Panorama images, making it more than just a video-focused device.
8K Video and Professional Color Workflows
The Luna Ultra records video at up to 8K30 and supports Dolby Vision HDR and 10-bit I-Log recording. Insta360 says the camera can capture up to 14 stops of dynamic range, preserving highlight and shadow detail in challenging lighting conditions.
For low-light shooting, the camera includes PureVideo Mode, which uses AI-powered image processing to reduce noise and improve detail in footage up to 4K60p. The camera’s Triple AI Chip handles image processing and computational photography tasks while supporting advanced video features.
Leica color profiles including Leica Natural, Leica Vivid, and Leica Chrome are built directly into the camera. The Luna Ultra also supports the professional ACES (Academy Color Encoding System) workflow for filmmakers and colorists.
Detachable Touchscreen Remote
One of the most innovative features of the Luna Ultra is its detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen controller.
The remote can display a live view feed and control camera settings from up to 20 meters (65 feet) away. It also includes a built-in microphone, allowing creators to record audio while operating the camera remotely.
For solo content creators, vloggers, and filmmakers, the detachable screen opens up new possibilities for filming without requiring a second operator.
AI Tracking and Stabilization
The Luna Ultra combines a three-axis mechanical gimbal with electronic image stabilization to keep footage smooth while moving.
Deep Track 5.0 powers the camera’s AI subject tracking capabilities, including Auto Tracking, Active Zoom Tracking, Group Tracking, and Smart Framing. These tools help keep subjects properly framed and in focus without constant manual adjustments.
The camera also embeds timecode directly into recorded footage, simplifying multi-camera synchronization during post-production.
Using the Insta360 mobile app, creators can share color presets through QR Color Share and take advantage of AI-assisted editing tools that automatically identify highlights and generate social-media-ready edits.
Compact Design and Long Battery Life
Despite its feature set, the Luna Ultra remains highly portable. The camera weighs just over 200g, putting it in the same portability class as many modern smartphones.
Power comes from a 1,550mAh battery rated for up to four hours of use. Fast charging can bring the battery to 80% capacity in approximately 23 minutes.
The camera includes 47GB of usable internal storage and supports microSD cards up to 1TB for extended recording sessions.
